Abstract
Subaltern Studies seeks to understand the presence within the study of history and society of those groups whose voices had been suppressed by dominant elite and colonial knowledge systems. Ranajit Guha examined this issue through the lens of subaltern political agency, demonstrating in his studies that subordinate groups were not merely passive recipients of the policies of power; rather, they possessed their own political consciousness and an autonomous domain of action. Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak gave a decisive turn to this discourse through her writings. In ‘Can the Subaltern Speak?’, she moved the question beyond the mere capacity to speak, linking it instead to structures of representation, mediation, and listening. This paper attempts to re-examine this intellectual tradition within the context of contemporary digital society and Artificial Intelligence. In contemporary times, social media and other digital platforms have created new opportunities for subaltern groups to engage in self-representation and collective mobilization within mainstream society; however, algorithmic systems based on the online and other availability of relevant past material have begun to influence which voices gain visibility, which content circulates, and which experiences are recorded as data and rendered computationally recognizable. In this context, this paper develops the proposed concept of ‘algorithmic subalternity.’ Thus, the traditional question of Subaltern Studies “Can the Subaltern Speak?” is extended to a new sociological question for the age of AI: “Can the Algorithm Hear the Subaltern?”
