Abstract
Social media has become an important instrument of political communication in contemporary democracies. Platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and X have changed the way candidates communicate with voters and the way voters obtain political information. This transformation is particularly significant in local elections, where voters are closely connected with candidates, community networks and local development issues. The present paper examines the impact of social media on electoral behaviour with emphasis on voter awareness, political participation, candidate image and voting decisions. The study is based mainly on secondary sources and follows a descriptive and analytical approach. The paper finds that social media can increase access to election information, facilitate communication between candidates and voters, encourage political discussion and improve candidate visibility. At the same time, fake news, misinformation, manipulated content, polarization, privacy concerns and the digital divide create challenges. Social media should therefore be considered an important factor in electoral communication, but not the sole determinant of voting behaviour.
