Abstract
India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and it is also a fact that it is also one of the most unequal countries. On the basis of statistics, it can be said that inequality has been increasing rapidly here for the last three decades. The rich are getting richer at a very fast pace, while the poor are still struggling to get minimum wage, access quality education and healthcare. This economic gap and growing inequalities affect women and children the most. The 'Time to Care' report released ahead of the 50th annual meeting of the World Economic Organization (WEF) reveals that 1% of India's population has four times more wealth than nearly 950 million (i.e., 70%) people. If seen, the number of billionaires in the world has doubled during a decade. And this increasing inequality has created many challenges and problems. It has also been revealed in this report that women in India are discriminated against at levels like political empowerment, economic participation and opportunities and health. It is also clear from a report that in terms of gender inequality, India was ranked 108th in the list of 153 countries in the year 2019, 112th in the year 2020 and 140th in the year 2021. Growing inequality in India, especially gender inequality, is a matter of deep concern, so an attempt has been made to present the sociological discussion on this subject in two parts in this article.
